For many of us that have been using the popular Instagram app, there has always been a desire to have web access to an account.  A few days ago, the Instagram blog officially announced this feature to its users.  Since the Facebook and Instagram acquisition, there have been rumors of possible changes and updates like this. Here is some more information on what this means, how to access your new profile, and some other tidbits…

What is an Instagram Profile?

According to Instagram, the new profile on the web is “a selection of your recently shared photographs just above your profile photo and bio, giving others a snapshot of the photos you share on Instagram. In addition, you can follow users, comment and like photos and edit your profile easily and directly from the web.”  When you view your profile or others, you will first notice that the overall look resembles the Facebook cover or timeline photo.  The users name and description is shown along with the # of photos, following, and followers.  It also has a “Follow” button which will make it easier for people and brands to increase it’s fan base.

Where is Your New Instagram Profile Located?

To find your profile or that of any other user, simply go to www.instagram.com/UserNameOfAccount.  For example, if you would like to view the photos and profile of a brand like Starbucks, you can go to http://instagram.com/starbucks.  If you do not see your profile up and running right away, keep checking back as it should be up sometime this week.

Who Can See Your Profile?

If you have your account set to public then anyone who types in your profile URL will be able to see all of your photos.  This isn’t much different than mobile and tablet users having access to your pictures except they can now view them on the web.  If you set your account to private then only allowed followers will be able to view photos when they are logged in.

Can Photos Be Uploaded From a Computer Now to Instagram?

No, according to Instagram they are only adding this option to make it easier to view, comment, and share photos from the web.  Just remember all the photos you share (if public) can be viewed easily now online…

What Does This Mean for Brands/Businesses?

The new online profiles provide brands and businesses another opportunity to connect with fans and increase their brand exposure.  Your new profile URL can be linked to your websites, blogs, in tweets, on Facebook, in promotional and marketing materials, in QR codes, and other creative avenues.  This can increase the amount of traffic to your brand page, increase your followers, increase comments, and increase your overall engagement on Instagram.
